Thanks JB! Warmest regards from the US. I think you and I might be the only two people who have played this. Lol

I had it working but then it wouldn't show anything full screen. The same as for the NHL games I had. I checked Run in Window and changed the settings to my desktop resolution fixed it.

Wish I could find a real solution for the crash bug and eliminate the need for dxwnd altogether. I actually did have a working fix years ago, for Win XP, but it doesn't work on 8 or 10.

DS, does OpenIce run sluggishly at all for you?
I hadn't tried playing this game in a while -- like, one Windows operating system and at least two versions of dxwnd ago. lol. Tried playing it last night and noticed it didn't look smooth. Loaded an FPS counter and saw it was only running at 15 FPS.
Under the DirectX tab, I changed the emulation setting from Primary Surface to Hybrid, and that took the FPS from 15 all the way to 50...just wondering if yours acts anything remotely like that, or if it's just me.

Works fine for me. I will look at my settings to see and post what the FPS is.

I hit 27. Changed it to Hybrid and it hit 50.

hi Matt, this thing works!! you are a life saver. this is for me and my friend a game we've been playing for 15+ years (I am 36now). We play "100 win tournaments", safe to say we are way over 2-3thousands games so far we do play other games, but this one has a special place in our hearts. the 1st quarter crash was pain in the ass, but we had a clean copy of xp to boot from, and it worked from there pretty good. now it was uninstalled and we had problems with xp installation and found this and it works. great. thank you for the tip

Hi, great site.
The dxwnd fix is not working for me. the game runs at playable frame rate thanks to dxwnd but the crash persists.
I am running:
amd 6300 cpu 16 gb ram geforce 1060 3GB
any other ideas?

I got it to stop crashing.
Instructions work well, but there must be some issue with latest version of DxWnd (2_04_47).
I checked the last modified date on the fix page and saw it was 2/16/17.
I decided to try a version of DxWnd from 2/17 (2_04_14) and it worked as described in the fix.
I read that at least one person is tired of running DxWnd before running OPENICE.exe.
If you paste this into a batch file (correcting path of course) in your Open Ice folder it will automate the startup process and kill dxwnd at the end.
If you don't know how to create a batch file:
Right Mouse Click on empty spot in Open Ice folder Select New -> Text Document Rename New Text Document.txt to OpenIce.bat
Right Mouse Click on OpenIce.bat and select "Edit"
Paste below into OpenIce.bat and save when you are done.
Don't forget to change PATH_TO_DXWND to the actual path to DXWND. Example: "D:\Program Files\2_04_14_Build\dxwnd.exe"
I'm pinging the loop back address on the local PC just to give DXWND time to come up before OPENICE.EXE is launched.
OpenIce.bat:
copy "C:\PATH_TO_DXWND\dxwnd.ini" . start /B "dxwnd" "C:\PATH_TO_DXWND\dxwnd.exe" ping -n 3 127.0.0.1 OPENICE.EXE taskkill /IM dxwnd.exe
You can create a shortcut to OpenIce.bat on your desktop if you want.
I changed the icon to use the same icon as OPENICE.EXE.
Thanks for your time.

Thanks for that post Chester, great info. I wasn't aware they'd changed up dxwnd that much. It's quite a bit different.
Open Ice still works for me with the latest version, but I had to click options and then select Expert mode before it would let me select the compatibility tab and the handle exceptions fix. It stays hidden otherwise. Kind of silly if you ask me, but no one did. =)
