Hi Matt,

this is an realy old ISO (czech version) and I realy dont remeber where is it from, but I tried it never before :/ So, yesterday I tried to install it on my old PC with win XP and it makes the same problem. SO I think the problem is with the ISO. I have only this one ISO and cant find or get another one... It is interresting that it crashes only during gameplay. Menu is absolutely ok. But when it crashes with win XP too, maybe the problem is the ISO I think. I tried to change game directory and the problem is stil the same.

After giving up on getting my old NHL 96 running I used your guide to get NHL 98 running on Win XP. However, the game runs extremely slow. Even the mouse cursor lags in the menus to the point of it being a struggle to even click the right menu buttons. Its the same in match mode. It was so slow i couldn't even bother waiting until face off.

Even the start up copyright screens are slow (I don't remember them being that slow).


A secondary issue is that there seems to be incorrect green areas in the graphic, but this is probably not something im going to be too worried about.


I installed from original CD on my old winxp32.
Its a super-duper PC with quad core and stuff like that. I don't know which specifics are relevant.
Sound and video run flawlessly.
I also installed dgVoodoo but there was no change and the game says i should not enable 3D-acceleration.


Any ideas?

Roberto - is there any way you could get that ISO to me? A dropbox account or something similar? Would love to download it and try for myself. See if I get the same error; then we would know for sure. I had wondered about whether your iso was a non-English version or not. No idea if that makes a difference somehow.

Johan - Greetings. 98 for me always had fairly slow menus on XP, but it should be clearing up once you're in game.

dgvoodoo can't work for you because it's based on DirectX11 which XP doesn't have. First step should be to remove all the dgvoodoo files from your NHL 98 folder. Next, download and install nGlide since that is a Windows XP-compatible program. I've used it successfully with NHL 98 on a Windows XP virtual machine, so it's possible.

Open the game - make sure the 3d acceleration setting is turned to on. The game will say if you don't have a compatible card blah blah blah but you can still go forward with it.

If this doesn't work, there's an older Glide wrapper called zeckensack's Glide, which is what I actually used to use years ago when I played this on XP.

Questions for you -- did you install the database patch from the first part of the guide here, and can you tell me how much RAM you have?

DSgamby - Have to wonder if there isn't some sort of background program causing this. It's just really odd that there would be no change running it in two completely different modes. I could see it glitching out differently, but not the same way.

Awesome, thanks so much. Going to take a bit to go through all this but appreciate you sticking with me.

Let's try this for NHL 99. Made a couple of changes to the reg key and patch. Old hat by now - unzip the files, double click the reg key, run the bat file for the patch. Just make sure nGlide is installed and dgvoodoo and the old patch are NOT. Also, turn off any Windows compatibility modes you had set on the nhl99.exe. Run as admin can be left checked.

[/a]****Oh, and the VirtualStore thing -- the keys on mine are located here. I'm guessing you won't have the same numbers, but I'm hoping this would be the progression > HKEY_USERS > click the bottom subfolder > VirtualStore > MACHINE > Software > Wow6432Node > EA SPORTS, if it exists. If there's an EA folder there you're going to want to delete it for sure.

For 99. The CD is blank because I had used the no cd patch as that is how I got it to work the last time.

ok, we're both awake I see...lol...I was scrolling through the old posts when I saw that; never noticed before that you ran a no CD. I just got done editing the post and reuploaded the file with the blank CD entries.

edit - just tested with the no CD patch, shouldn't be a problem in itself but make sure you redownload that file...first registry I posted with the D:\ drive is going to give you an error if you use it.

NHL99 could run on Windows7 x86 successfully but 3D was not looking good. 3D effect did not work at all. So, I removed it unfortunately. I got AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series.

Thanks, the game now runs with 95 compatibility.   The only problem is the sides of the screen are wider than my monitor so a small portion is cut off.

This is with 98/ME compatibility
Here is what is does. It would have a small less than a 1/4 of the top left of the screen window. It would show a a fracture of second of into, go back to the desktop. I would click on the NHL 99 icon on the taskbar. It would show another part of the into and that sequence would do that through the whole intro and I can't escape it. Also, during the intro, There are white lines over the footage. Once I get to the main menu. It is gone.  the last time that I ran it with 98/ME compatibility.  It crashed.  Switch to 95 and it worked.

With no compatibility.  Does not work.  The same as before.

Roberto - Tried your ISO and it does freeze after about a minute of play. I turned off color commentary in the options menu and the game didn't freeze until I tried to pause it.

Think we can get your ISO working - I just want to know, would you rather have the game play in Czech or English if you had your choice?

DS - Re: the cut off screen, have you tried fiddling with the nGlide configurator? Should be in your start menu somewhere. That's what actually controls your in-game resolution. You can set the resolution to "by desktop" and the game should have the same res. as whatever your desktop is. 

Gretzky - DS made a good call on Amazon. Looks like they also offer a direct download of the game for sale -- NHL 09 on Amazon

Thanks, that worked and I got rid of the 3Dfx logo as well. 

Now, I got to get Blommans's NHL 99 Roster Editor to install.

The download is only for Americans so unless gretzky is an American. He won't be able to get it. I personally prefer hard copies of games as it takes lots of time to download and install. I have 07 and 08 as a download but I still bought the discs.

When 2001 and 02 crash to desktop, is there a little black rectangle in the top left corner of your screen when it happens?
