Hi Cowboy - what happens if you set the regular Windows 95 compatibility mode on the Clue.exe?

OK, thank you. Alright, can you tell me what the file information is for your Clue.exe file? Mine says last updated 9/11/1998, 377 KB filesize.

That's the patched version - you're good there. ok, this is nothing but a dart throw but...you said the game disappears after it shows the picture. This picture? If so, that is right when the intro video is supposed to play, which would make me think it could be a movie playback problem. For ha-has you can try this -- download the Codec Tweak Tool. Click the ACM/VFW (x86) button. At the next screen, look to see if there is an entry under either enabled or disabled codecs for "Cinepak." If it's there, place a checkmark next to it. Hit apply and close and try the game again.

Grr .. okay, make sure you undo that change then. Does anything related to the crash appear in Event Viewer? Try running the game so it fails again, then go to event viewer. It should be under Windows Administrative Tools, or you can type Event Viewer in the search bar. Once loaded hit Windows Logs > Application. See if there are any red exclamation point errors at the top of the screen. I don't like sending people on wild goose chases if I can help it...and I'm kind of just guessing with this. I can just say if it was me in this same situation, my next move would probably be to try to download an ISO (the one for this game is very easy to find on google) and see if I got a different outcome than with my CD. Then, if that failed, I might even try to run the game in Windows safe mode to see if it will work there. There could be a conflict with one of your background programs.

Hi Lumanny Check this for me -- open Control Panel, then select Programs and Features. On the left side of the screen, you should see "Turn Windows features on or off." At the next screen, open "Legacy Components" and check to see if DirectPlay is listed. If it is, make sure it has a checkmark next to it. If there was no checkmark there before, the computer will take a minute to install DirectPlay. Might have to restart the PC too. After that try the game again and see what happens.

Regarding the problem of the game soft-locking when a character finishes their turn: I found that turning off the "Walking Animations" in the game's options menu helped. Between that and setting compatibility mode to Windows 95, so far I haven't had another game freeze.
I'm running this on a Dell with Windows 10, using an Intel i7, 4GB RAM, and Intel HD Graphics. In the Compatibility settings, I set it for Windows 95, to run the game as an administrator, and disabled fullscreen optimizations. (I'm not sure if the last two had any effect) And yes, I used the Clue patch, which corrected the inability to enter a name.

Hi there Matt! I stumbled upon your site trying to find fixes for Ultimate Yahtzee and Clue. Your fix for Yahtzee was amazing! And your steps on fixing Clue have fixed every issue that has come up....except the one the last poster had as well. I am able to select characters, but when it says "Entering Mansion" I hear the dreaded Windows error message sound, minimize the game and that pop-up is there. I can't hit Ignore or Retry as it pops back up again. I have to abort, which closes the game. Attachments:
