Great! Well, it was kind of an accident how I found it. I was looking through options in dxwnd the other day when I noticed "Hook DirectSound" I was like...huh, I wonder what that does, let me google it. First thread that came up was this: Need For Speed II and dsound.dllSoon as this dude mentioned fixing NFSII I really perked up, because I had always believed NHL 98, NBA 98, and NFSII had the same sound issue. Sure enough this .dll fixes all three games. Your theory about the dsound.dll could not have been more bang on.

Hi Matt,
Do you have the default keyboard controls for NHL Powerplay 98?

Hi expy, I thought that was going to be an easy one, but, wow, it isn't. I always played that with a controller plugged in - without one I guess the game won't even let you enter the controls screen, and the key combos aren't listed anywhere, not even in the readme. Best I could figure out on my own is this Use the numpad keys to move up/down/left/right -- 8 for up, 4 for left, 6 for right, 2 for down. Also how you move up and down the menu options -- to select an option you have to press enter, but NOT the enter key by the numpad. The usual one. Lol Slapshot / Poke Check = Enter Wrist shot / Hook = Shift Pass / Change Player = Comma/Quotation mark key (to the left of Enter) Speed Burst/ Body Check = Question mark/ forward slash key

Hi Jamie, It crashes before the intro/main menu appears? Or after? First thing I'd try if you haven't already is installing nGlide. nGlide download linkInstall that, then download and install this registry key. Double click on the file and it'll ask you if you want to add the information. Just press OK. Try the game again after that and let me know what happens.

For newer games, most of the time a faster system is going to be better, but for these older games, a lot of times it just makes it harder to get them to work. I know that sounds totally irrational, but it's how it is.
Have you tried the Windows compatibility modes? If you don't know how -- do a right mouse-button click on the NHL 2001 icon, select properties from the popup menu, hit the compatibility tab, then place a checkmark next to 'run this program in compatibility mode for'. From there you can select Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP, etc.
I've had a couple people mention that NHL 2001 wouldn't load for them until they selected Windows 95 mode.

Hi Matt, many thanks for this forum and ypur help! While I still have a bunch of legacy computers (Compaq Deskrpo XL,6333, EN800 and Dell Dimension 4600 running Win95 and Win98SE to play my beloved EA NHL99 hockey game, I always wanted to be able to run it on my monster machines but always failed. Upon stumbling on your site and thanks to you I got it running no problems using nGglide and your registry key on my Win7 Pro 32bit OS. Thanks again!

Hello Mev. You're right; it sounds like the same problem. Try this -- load up your CD or ISO file and open it in File Explorer. I'm hoping you will see a SETUP folder. Inside the setup folder there should be a subfolder named after the language your CD is. For example, mine is "ENGLISH". Someone else here had German. I'm guessing yours will say Czech or something very close to that. Next, press Windows key+R together on your keyboard to pop open a Run window. Type regedit. Inside the Registry Editor, navigate to the following path: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\EA Sports\NHL 2000Look for the Language entry on the right side of the screen and double click on it. Where it says "Value data:" type in the exact name of the folder we looked at earlier. Press OK, close the Registry editor, and try running the game again.
