Hello Mat, and thanks alot for the instructions and tech support.
I was able to follow along and get the game working very well, except for one problem: When the game goes to battle animations in Ultimate Risk (battleboxes i think they are called) where it runs an animation of soldiers shooting at each other or shelling a fortress, the game crashes just as the animation should begin, gives the error message "RISK.exe has stopped working", and gives no option except to close the program.
I had the animations working on a previous install of the game on the same machine, but that install was unstable in other ways so I removed it and followed your instructions instead. The intro animations work fine, and the main menu to. I haven't been able to test the end game animation yet. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi Patrick, I'm just going to level with you here - I have never played this game! Lol. Except to test it to see if I could get into a game. Thank you for the crash report; I'm going to load up a few games to see if I can duplicate it on my end. I do know there's a registry entry for the battle boxes, or "anims"...might have something to do with that, but that's just speculation. Anyway, I'll look into it and let you know if I come up with anything.

Well, the issue Patrick had was with animations - I played for quite some time and I never could get any videos to even trigger to test whether it would crash or not.
If yours crashes during gameplay please let me know.

Hello Matt, Thank you for all your work in setting up this guide - So far its working great! The only issue I've run into is that when one player is eliminated from the game, the game will crash. It will attempt to play the losing animation, and then will say "Risk.exe has stopped working". Has anyone had any luck resolving this?
Also, I had a similar problem with the animations in Ultimate Risk, but that was mitigated by turning 'battleboxes' off. After that, they were never a problem again.

Hi Zeke -- I did some googling and all I found was a forum post from someone in 2013 with the same issue. No answers, unfortunately.
Do you know your way around event viewer at all? If you opened that up and look under Windows Logs > Application, there might be an entry or two from the Risk crashes with some more information about the error.

Hello,
I am trying to get my old copy of Risk up and running and following your steps I managed to get into a game. However the color will get mangled after about 5 minutes into a game even on 16 bit color and changing the screen resolution to 800x600. Also, any time an in game graphic runs (like when a player is killed) the game crashes.
Any ideas on how to fix either issue?
Thanks

Sorry,
I meant to add the error information from the event viewer for when the animation crashed:

Hi west I honestly don't; the only workaround I've heard of for the crashes is to turn off "battleboxes" in the Ultimate Risk options. The color thing - which version of Windows are you using? If it's 7, dxwnd has a Windows 7 color fix option in it. Hit or miss, but sometimes it hits. Alternatively, download dgvoodoo and unzip the ddraw.dll to your Risk folder to see if that changes anything.

Hi gcn Where did you install the game to? ie which directory...did you use the C:\Games\Board\Risk or something else. It's always hard to tell when Windows doesn't bother to give you an error message, but I think this could be registry related - I notice when I delete the keys altogether that the game 'does nothing' when I try to load it. Also, weird question, but does the mouse cursor 'spin' for a few moments after you click on the Risk.exe?

Hi, I have been playing this for about 20 years (yikes). The best way I have found is to create an ISO of the CD and then use Virtual CloneDrive from Elaborate Bytes to mount the CD. Remember to change the drive letter of the CD to the Virtual one. www.elby.ch/en/products/vcd.htmlThis has been the best. If your video goes funky, Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and then click Cancel. This normally restores the video. I have a few different versions of the Risk.exe application. There are different versions that had bug fixes. Hasbro use to have them up an a web site, but I can't find it anymore. I believe I use 1.3. Rich
