Link to Part I Starting a new thread for these as the original one is on its 12th page now. For those of us who are chatting in the last one, by all means let's keep going in that thread -- I just link to these forum threads in the game pages themselves, so I want to give new people coming in a clean thread to look at.

Hi Matt.
I have tried downloading NHL 98 on my Dell Laptop (OS: Windows 8.1), but it won't let me download it. I have followed all of your steps.
Is there something I am missing you think?
Thank you.

Hello BP Hm, you might be missing something...or I might be. What do you mean exactly by it won't let you download it? It won't let you copy the files off of the CD? How/where does it hang up? I used to have 8.1 on my laptop before I upgraded to 10 - 98 worked fine with it at the time, but I don't know if any updates were released for it that might have changed/affected things.

Hi Matt; thanks for the reply.
I follow all the steps (re: step 4), but every time I try to "play" the game, it says "the game is not properly installed". I can copy all the pertinent files to my drive.
I know it's hard to diagnose in a thread, but this is where I am currently getting stuck.
Thanks for your time.

Hi BP No problem, I hope we can get it working. These games can be tricky to troubleshoot over this, but I do basically know what that message means: either the registry key is wrong somehow, or the game isn't seeing the registry right for some other reason. You installed the registry key from the guide, right? Which drive letter did you download? I can double check; maybe I made a mistake somewhere. First thing I'd try before we drive ourselves crazy is running the NHL98.exe in Windows 95 compatibility and run as administrator modes. See if that does anything.

Hi Matt, I'm having a hard time trying to install NHL 2001 on my computer. On the page itself, it looks like there's only download links for windows 8/10, and I use windows 7. My current error right says "Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart the application." Any help would be great, thanks.

Hey, man. I am having difficulty with NHL99. I followed all the steps and when I click on nhl99.exe it pops up "Please insert the NHL 99 CDROM into drive C:\ and try again." Would you happen to know from just that where I could have went wrong? Let me know if you need more info!

Hi guys, thanks for stopping by Chill - First thing to try is always -- set the game .exe (in this case nhl2001.exe) to Windows 95 compatibility mode and run as administrator. If that doesn't work, open regedit (start-run-regedit) Now depending on whether you have a 64 bit or 32 bit Windows, the NHL 2001 keys will be located in either: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\EA Sports\NHL 2001 (for 64 bit) or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\EA Sports\NHL 2001 (for 32 bit) Your screen should look something like this. Make sure the CD Drive entry matches the letter of the drive you have the CD in. J -- are you sure the error message says please insert the CD into drive C:/? That would really be weird -- C should be your hard drive. What version of Windows are you on?

Hey man. Figured out the problem was my pathing. It's all good now!

Cool, thanks for coming back and letting me know! I really appreciate you doing that.
That's the thing: pathing and the registry key are everything when it comes to these games. The "Game is not properly installed" or "Can't find the CD" messages -- 9 times out of 10, all it means is that the information in the "Directory" entries in the registry isn't matching up with the location of NHLxx.exe on the hard drive.

Hey Matt,
I can't seem to get the database patch to work for NHL 98. I click the batch file and cmd pops up for a second and then disappears with nothing happening afterwards
Thanks

Hi Jeff, that's actually all it should be doing. As long as you got to that black 'cmd' window popup, it should have installed.
Would be nice if it gave some sort of notification, but it doesn't.

Hi Matt I did your tutorial for nhl99. I have a a 64bits os. But still doesn't work. If I understood well, doesn't have to set up the game ? Just launch the exe? Thanks. (sorry for my poor english, France here).
